Explosion-Proof RTD
Explosion-proof RTDs utilize flameproof (gap explosion-proof) technology: all potentially incendive components—such as terminal blocks—are fully enclosed within a robust, high-strength explosion-proof junction box (typically aluminum alloy). Should an internal explosion occur due to a fault, the resulting flame and hot gases pass through precisely engineered narrow gaps in the box joints, which provide sufficient “quenching length” and cooling to absorb energy and extinguish the flame before it exits, thereby preventing ignition of external explosive atmospheres; the sensing element itself functions identically to a standard RTD—relying on the temperature-dependent resistance change of the platinum wire—to accurately measure temperature while ensuring intrinsic safety in hazardous areas.Typically used together with display instruments, recorders, and computers to directly measure temperatures of liquids, steam, gases, and solid surfaces in the range of 0–500°C in hazardous industrial environments where explosive hydrocarbons may be present.
